About Science City

Science City Kolkata is the largest science center in the Indian subcontinent. It was inaugurated on July 1, 1997, and is managed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), a unit under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

This state-of-the-art science center offers interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and educational programs that make learning science fun and engaging for people of all ages. The complex spans over 50 acres and combines education with entertainment, making it one of Kolkata's most popular attractions, attracting millions of visitors annually.

Science City is designed to inspire curiosity and promote scientific thinking among visitors. It features cutting-edge technology, immersive experiences, and exhibits that cover various fields of science including physics, biology, astronomy, and technology.

Main Attractions

Dynamotion Hall

Features various interactive exhibits including Illusions, Powers of Ten, Fresh Water Aquarium, Live Butterfly Enclave, and Science on a Sphere. This hall demonstrates the principles of physics and natural phenomena through engaging displays.

Space Odyssey

Houses the Space Theater with 3D Vision Theater, Mirror Magic, and Time Machine. The Space Theater offers immersive experiences about astronomy and space exploration, while the 3D Vision Theater presents educational films in stunning 3D.

Maritime Centre

Showcases India's maritime history and navigation systems. Exhibits include models of ships, navigation instruments, and displays about India's rich maritime heritage and its role in global trade.

Earth Exploration Hall

A two-story hall featuring various characteristics of Earth and natural phenomena. Interactive displays explain geological processes, weather patterns, and the planet's diverse ecosystems.

Science Park

An open-air area with various scientific exhibits and rides including Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain, Road Train, Cable Car, and Monorail Cycle. Perfect for outdoor learning and entertainment.

Evolution Park

Showcases the journey of life on Earth from the beginning to the present day. Features life-size models of dinosaurs, early mammals, and various stages of evolution, making it an educational and fascinating experience.

History

Science City Kolkata was conceptualized as part of India's initiative to promote scientific awareness and education. The project was developed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), which is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The center was inaugurated on July 1, 1997, with the aim of making science accessible and enjoyable to the general public. Since its opening, Science City has become a landmark educational institution in Kolkata, attracting millions of visitors including students, families, and tourists from around the world.
